For language practice, do not try to understand every word. Pick one scene and listen for greetings, café phrases, apologies, directions, and polite expressions. Those are the words that help most when you are actually in France.

A few phrases to listen for:

  • Bonjour - say it like: BONH-JOOR

Use it before asking for anything in France.

  • S’il vous plaît - say it like: SEAL VOO PLAY

The polite “please” that softens almost every request.

  • Je voudrais - say it like: JUH VOODRAY

“I would like,” perfect for cafés, bakeries, and markets.

  • Excusez-moi or Pardon (for sorry) - say it like: X-KUSAY MWA or PARDONH

Your best friend in the Métro, museums, and shops.

  • Parfait! - say it like: PARFAY (for perfect) or Excellent! (do not say the t at the end like for Croissant) - say it like: X-SAYLANH - - say it like: KRWA-SSANH

Useful phrases to show your appreciation. And remember knowing just a few French words will melt the ice and will open the doors to a much better French experience.

A few real phrases can turn a film night into Paris practice.

How to turn movie night into Paris-ready French

The goal is not perfection. The goal is confidence. Watch once with English subtitles, then replay a favorite scene with French subtitles. Write down five phrases you would actually say on a trip.

For example, a scene in a bakery can teach you more practical French than a grammar chart if you pay attention to tone, greetings, and the order of the exchange. In France, the first “bonjour” matters. The small polite words matter. The pause before asking matters.

That is exactly why Miss Valerie’s French coaching skips the stiff textbook feeling. The focus is real French for real moments:

  • Ordering at a café without freezing

  • Asking for directions with confidence

  • Speaking to shopkeepers politely

  • Understanding what locals mean beyond the literal words

  • Knowing where to go and how to behave once you arrive

That is the heart of Your French Movie Guide Free Netflix Prime PBS Paris Ready with Miss Valerie. The movies open the door. The language helps you walk through it.

So choose your mood tonight. Pick Paris, Provence, mystery, comedy, or food. Press play. Listen for one phrase you can use on your next trip.

And if you want to make that phrase truly yours, start with a Complimentary 30-minute Assessment with Native Miss Valerie and get ready for France the natural way.
